Google contacts not working properly

I had a LG G4 phones which went wrong. For a few weeks I had a LG Leon.

On the Old LG the contacts synced correctly - on the Leon they did to.

My LG G4 came back repaired and I set it up as a fresh install.

I can only get 3075 out of my 3389 contacts across onto the new LG

I have tried the old trick of stopping the app service, deleting the data, deleting the cache, etc etc - adding / removing the gmail account but nothing seems to fix it.

If I add a contact to my gmail account on my pc, it pushes it to the phone. If I add a contact to my phone, it pushes it to the pc.

but it does not want to pull the entire gmail contacts across. Any ideas?

In contacts settings you can filter which categories of contacts will be displayed - could the missing ones be excluded here?

Sorry, I've tried that.
Rather bizzarly I added one new contact to the phones and it added another 75 of the missing ones
