My P970 is now running 2.3.4 Gingerbread and I have reverted to using the built-in browser after trying the latest versions of opera mini and opera mobile. Mini was not faster and the full sized opera mobile was less responsive to touch + zoom and did not render pages well for a phone screen (better for tablets).

Is this because the built in browser has been optimized to work with the phone hardware?

I've been using Dolphin Browser, works fine for me.

In my opinion the best choice is opera mini that allows to download pdfs and other files to the phone. It is efficient and it wastes just a few mb if you have 3G conexion. The built in browser... is the most inefficient way to surf the internet.
