wireless networks available icon and notification NOT showing up in notification area

i recently bought an lg e980 white UNLOCKED phone and took it to t-mobile. before i bricked my old phone, which was the blue e980, i had AT&T. whenever my wifi was on and there were networks available, i would get a notification saying wireless networks are available. with this new phone and t-mobile, however, i do not get the notification. does anyone know how to fix?
