Default Jumping ship to another phone. Help me out guys.

The Optimus S community here has been great! This is really what got me into the Android platform and even dabble in some development. This will always be my home. At this point, I'm due for an upgrade and need to grab it while I'm still able to. I've been reading/researching and I'm really eying the Samsung Galaxy S II with Sprint as my upgrade. Would like to get anyone's opinion on what phone I should consider. If anyone has experience with other phones or owns any of the other Sprint phones, I would like to hear recommendations. At this point, all I have to go on is reviews from general Sprint customers from the Sprint site, etc...

EDIT: Just bought the SGS2G2S4GIIGalaxyAndroidSprint from Amazon for 79.99.
And thanks everyone for the input! I will be sure to stick my head in here and visit! (as if anyone would miss me at this point based on how long I've been absent... lmao!!)

UPDATE: (Same as my last post in this thread)
Just wanted to report back guys. Thanks for not letting me forget this thread tmeader!

I love the Galaxy S II. It was definitely worth the upgrade! The screen is a good size for me; however, it may not be for some... I have large hands and I like the larger screen.
It's very fast and smooth. And the best thing about it: It's Android!
I have rooted, rom'd, and using custom prl (with plans to use the roam control app in the future). My 3G speeds are usually above 1.5mb at home and around 600kbps at work... All in all a great phone.
Another thing with this is the battery life is VERY impressive!! With normal daily use, making some calls, sending texts, browsing the net, etc. I usually end up with more than 50% battery left by the time I make it home. I overused it today to purposely test it and I sat at about 38% when I hit the door. That's without a charger plugged into it all day.

    With moderately-heavy use all day:

Get this phone if you can!

I have a family plan for myself, mom, and sister

I bought my sister the IPhone 4s - 64GB version for Christmas

She is loving it, and with all my discounts, got it for 1/2 price.

If you go that route - get the Apple Care + plan too - you can get it direct from Apple

Any recommendation is appreciated. An honest opinion is usually the most helpful.
I do not intend to start a phone war with this thread. Just want my next phone to be as badass as my Optimus S.
Will miss the devs from this phone.

EDIT: For those wondering, I won't be getting an Iphone (not to take away from DoesItMatter's suggestion. I just personally have a vendetta against Apple products) and being the hypocrite that I am, I own an Ipod...

If you're looking for a similar level of dev/ROM support, it's hard to go wrong with the Nexus S. That's pretty much as good as it gets.

That said, I'm in a similar situation in the next few months (was trying to hold out for Sprint's LTE phones, but now it looks like that might not be until late 4th quarter), and I've SERIOUSLY been eying the Photon and the Galaxy S II 4G Touch. Samsung has already acknowledged ICS for the S II, and I still haven't heard anything one way or another from Motorola (surprisingly).

Hopefully HydroROM will tide me over until I can make up my mind. Let us know what you go with.

You can't go wrong with ant of the HTC evo models. Excellent phone with alot of custom development. Heard some horror stories of the sgs2, random reboots, some where you can't power back up and very little as of now for mods with a high brick risk. If rooting and romming is important check here and xda to see the different status of what is going on.

For me if I could get a new phone today I would get the evo. HTC knows their stuff.

Actually, now that you mention it, I did really love the look of the HTC Evo Design. Only held off on it due to the fact that it's still a single core.

there is a phone on my account ( my moms phone) that is due for an upgrade, even though we just got it lol, so im gonna use that upgrade to do my phone in the next few months. I am thinking about Samsung Galaxy S II as well based off specs and what people have told me. only downside seems battery life, but with a custom rom and tweaks, it can be made to last longer

Got a buddy who has the Evo and he likes it - main complaint is battery life

He always has to carry a spare battery and have it on the charger when in the car

Great phone with a hacked rom though

And yes - I said I got my SISTER the phone - no IPhone for me - too addicted to flashing new roms!

EVO 3D is and option. I own one but it's not activated. Hoping that my wife will like it and eventually drop her Optimus for it. Getting her to upgrade her electronics is painful. lol. Seems to her there is no benefit to upgrading if her current phone still works...

The SGS2E4GT is sweet and fluid; hard to believe how thin it is too. I am tempted more as the price comes down.

The Evo Design is also tempting as an upgrade. The size and durability seems just right for getting more screen space but keeping it portable and pocket-friendly. The limited numbers on the processor and internal memory are the only issues I have with it, but it would probably work great for me.

Every phone has faults, all things considered, epic 4g touch is the best overall phone on sprint right now.

If you have a specific need, then possibly another phone would work better for you.

The phone is crazy fast and super smooth.

Rooting is super easy. The bootloader is not locked. They have their version of fastboot called odin, so you almost never brick your phone.

I actually ported over the optimus automated root over to e4gt making even easier for first timers

I love how the Samsung galaxy s II epic 4g touch abbreviation is longer than the name of most phones...

I've been thinking about this too. Had an upgrade since November and want a Nexus, however the Nexus S 4G is a year old already and we may not see the Galaxy Nexus on Sprint until lte. Unless they release it as LTE ready to before we get the network.

I've been considering grabbing a Nexus S 4G on Craigslist for 150-200 bucks and use that until next black Friday when hopefully Sprint will have a Galaxy Nexus on sale... Or Wirefly/Amazon I should say.

FYI, wireless.amazon.com has an upgrade to the SGSII EPIC 4G for 79.99.

Hell, for that price I might just have to order it. From what I understand, the battery life of the Epic 4G (using 3G) is actually by and large better than the Optimus S (as long as the screen isn't on torch mode all the time).

I went through a similar exercise recently - contract was up in August so I've been watching since then. I really like the Nexus concept, but the 4g is a generation behind. The Photon was my favorite until the sgs2e4t came out; by the specs they look about the same but sgs2 users seem happier overall. I would slightly prefer the sgs2 over the Photon, but-

When the Photon was free on Black Friday, I was very close to pulling the trigger. In the end I decided my Optimus will be fine until mid- or late-year, when LTE devices (hopefully including the new Nexus) will be available; I'd rather not have to trust in Clearwire staying solvent until I'm ready to upgrade again, and I'm not interested in paying retail for a phone.

As always, my two cents are worth what you paid. Best of luck and happy holidays!

Nice. Please let me know how it compares in battery life to the Optimus S when you get the chance. If it's comparable... I'll definitely be hopping on board.

Actually, Sprint has already funded the Clearwire network through I believe 2014... so that's not a problem. I'll be using 3G anyway, since 4G is still WAY too high a battery drain.
