Default Is there any way to enable full 360, or at least 180 screen rotation?

I've posted previously about the issue of right angle adapters not working with most ear buds. As it turns out, it's not really due to an "issue" or a bug, but rather to the way way the ear bud connector is designed to work with the small media control button on the wire itself. Using two right angle adapters makes controlling and using the device more comfortable in several ways; for example it's easier to drape something over the top and sides of the phone when I'm using it in a darkened bedroom and don't want the light to disturb my sleeping spouse. (Damn these things are bright, even at the dimmest backlight setting.)

One thing that would help would be the ability to hold the phone upside down, so the cord comes out from the "bottom" as it were. But the only app I've seen that will allow this is the built-in camera; everything else will rotate only 90 degrees at most. The apps that I use the most are Tune-In Radio and any of several music/audio playback apps. I have Google Music Play and DoubleTwist, but lately I've been liking the default Music app better than either of them. In fact, I only use DT for podcast acquisition, because that's about all it's any good for--and I was dumb enough to buy the paid version. All these apps are alike in not being able to rotate more than 90 degrees.

I'm hesitant to flash an ICS based ROM on this device, but if I do that, will it enable full rotation? IIRC one of the big UI enhancements in ICS is that the four hardware buttons on the front are now fully enabled in the screen itself. Don't know why, but somehow that makes me think they might have enabled full rotation when they did that.

Any of the CM Roms will have the 180° option

CM7 has 90, 180, 270 rotation options. It also has the Night RenderFX mode and widget, which I found to be great at taking the in-your-face edge of the brightness in bed or driving at night.
If you are inclined to spend a lot of money and want a pretty trophy with which to pass the next few years of your life that talks to you in a condescending voice, can't navigate to save its life, expects full control over all you do, demands $13 for a $3 purchase, allegedly has a single recessed button, needs an expensive computer and a credit card to do anything, hates your music and has purses designed just for it...

This might be something I need to try. I did have CM7 for quite awhile and remember those display options you mentioned, but at the time wasn't having the issue with the ear buds, and therefore didn't have any particular reason to try out the rotation feature. I didn't have any particular problem with CM7, but IIRC when Sprint finally fixed their Gingerbread upgrade, I went to that, then rooted, then ultimately flashed Hydro.

Relevant follow-up thread, about how to deal with the issue of the baseband difference between HydroROM and CM7, is here.

I will try this later today and report my results over there.

I absolutely hate bright screens at night....check out an app called "Screen Filter" i think its by haxxor. allows you to dim the screen as low as you want, way lower than the screen settings...not sure how it works cause it doesnt adjust the brightness, but it works great, especially if you hot key it to the cam or search button or something. highly recommend.
