Carrier IQ

@mesocyclone:
gROM is based on the Sprint release, so yes, the bits are likely there unless the devs have intentionally removed them.

This rootkit looks to be pretty fierce. The only way to be totally sure you don't have any bit of it is to use an AOSP ROM, such as Cyanogen Mod. If you are on ZVH baseband, with Your Mom ROM, Team Hydro has disabled it there or has a flashable mod.

In the meantime, you can kill the process via Applications-->Running services. Unfortunately, it will comeback on reboot.

For what it's worth, I list getting completely rid of or at least stopping this process among my top 3 reasons to root.

Not to completely hijack this thread but what are your other 2 reasons? Just want to make sure I am not missing something.

Well, the real reason to root is to control your own phone so that it does all that you want and doesn't annoy the piss out of you. :) If I had to distill it down to just three, the other two for me (as I use this for work) would be EAS bypass and Cisco VPN capabilities. But not everyone wants or needs those.

If you are considering it, here is a list of questions you may be asking yourself that rooting can answer.

And here are some of the gains in no particular order.

So what your saying is Cm7 roms are free of this hidden beast? My phone still has VD ive been waiting to get it the ZVH cure till there is a stable cm7 rom for it, but if this carrier I Q thing is still worrying people as it seams it is still, im really gonna last minute the baseband transfer.

Im running grom 2.1 and cant find any ser vice running for ciq.
ran the scanner and it only found the two lib co files.
:-\
Maybe im doing it wrong? Or msybe ciq was removed by scroller?

I'm on MomRom and I can't find it running ANYWHERE! :-) Thanks TeamHydro:cool:

For those of you with rooted phones who are not lucky enough to have a custom rom with carrier iq removed, I have created an android app that will detect the presence of, and can kill the iqmsd process mentioned above. It does not erase ciq from the phone, but the process will not be running until the next reboot. I'm looing for anyone interested in beta testing. I've run on my phone with no issues. Please pm me if interested. Thanks

Yes, CM7 is an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) build, so it does not get any of the attention/integration that your carrier (Sprint) does to its ROM. There are a few disadvantages of bypassing that party (VVM, Navigation, certain drivers...), but being that CarrierIQ is something that the OEM installs at the behest of the carrier, it will not be there in any form.

Custom ROM's based on stock will have at least the two libraries in place and possibly something running that doesn't show up in the system monitor (Manage Apps/Processes). DO NOT REMOVE those two libraries if you see them! All the ones that I have used do not have the app, but some (Reborn, at least) have the process running. This can be stopped manually each boot and permanently with a theme change or a quick flash.

I'm not sure exactly what you are saying about the basebands, but currently, the CM7 ports for the Optimus S are all for ZVD. I don't think there is any advantage to ZVH radio, so why hold out for a ZVH CM7 build to try it?

What I think is funny is that this hot the news months and months after us custom romers had already noted and fixed the issue. All thanks to our great devs !!

Yeah, I was really surprised that all of a sudden this was a big thing. Heck, I think I still had my Samsung Moment when I first heard of CarrierIQ.

No he did not.

As gROM is a tweaked version of the stock ROM, it looks to me like most or all of the CIQ bits that are in stock are still in gROM. Hopefully someone with greater knowledge of it can confirm or correct me on that.

As was already pointed out still there.

I know the OptiRom thread used to have the noIQ patch, but I couldn't find it. I looked on my computer and found the copy I had before of it. I have used this on gROM and it worked just fine. Of course I'd make a nand back up just in case. Just flash in recovery and it should work. Maybe clear cache/dalvik to be safe.

This file should work for ZVH gROM or Opti-ROM. No idea if it works with anything else.
