i need help flashing a rom

what i have done so far:
1) I have root permissions
2) I have a rom on my sd card
3) I have a recovery image

but when i boot into recovery there is no option for install rom
so I reboot into recovery and the only options shown to me

the options it gives me are:
1. reboot system now
2. apply sdcard.update.zip (this does nothing when i try it says nothing is found on the card although it obviously is)
3. wipe data/factory reset
4. wipe cache partition

i suspect im using the wrong recovery image
because in the videos i watched the user had alot more options then 4
could some1 plz point me in the direction of a more useful recovery image

You do not have a custom recovery. That is still a stock recovery.
Which custom recovery where you trying?
Look in the stickies and go to the custom recovery, roms & kernals thread. I would recommend Xionia recovery.

Yes there is a option to flash zip from SD card on Xionia to install (flash Rom)!
You do not want to use "apply sdcard:update.zip"
