Re: Gingerbread is here!
Yup, used the update.zip for my phone last night after the kiddo was in bed (update.zip was from the rooting thread). So far the keyboard feels more responsive in general... and loving the darker theme. After the cm7 gets updated, i might root again.

Hawaiian-
Yes, you will need to unroot and revert back to stock rom and stock recovery to apply the official Gingerbread update. Visit the thread in the rooting and roms section of this forum to get the necessary instructions on what you'll need to do. Some of the other guys have already figured out how to root the official GB update. Hope this helps.

Re: Gingerbread is here!
You do not need to revert to stock rom. You only need to have stock recovery (V9 recovery if you want to root ZVH). If you have one of the "enhancements" that moves cache to sd or dalvik to cache, you might want to "wipe data" or it could run out of space trying to upgrade.

Re: Gingerbread is here!
You can just download the update.zip from the ZVH root thread in my signature and put it on your sdcard. Make sure you have stock recovery then boot into recovery and apply sdcard:update.zip.
However if you want to root ZVH, you should follow the full set of instructions. If you apply ZVH without following the root instructions, and decide later on you want to root ZVH, you'll need to revert. - 09-16-2011, 10:27 PM #16

Re: Gingerbread is here!
Usually with updates, that is the case, because they are shipped as patches to existing files.
This particular update though is a full update, so they format your /system and write all the new files, thus there is no reason to have stock rom, it just gets formatted over. - 09-16-2011, 11:38 PM #18

Re: Gingerbread is here!
You don't need to unroot with other updates either. You just have to have the stock ROM files in place. With this update being a full update, you don't even need the stock ROM files in place. There is really no advantage to "unrooting", removing the su support files from /system because this update just formats /system anyway.

Re: Gingerbread is here!
Can someone enlighten me....
3 of the features of the new gingerbread update state..
Camera application update - What exactly was changed?
Power management and task killer applications - Where exactly are these?
New Keyboard - Anyone get word suggestions to work correcty? It will only suggest words from my contacts list. - 09-17-2011, 07:41 PM #25
Re: Gingerbread is here!
Got the update yesterday, and I too noticed these things.
The camera quality is the same, and I saw nothing new or changed whatsoever. Thankfully, it didn't make an negative affect either.
Not seeing them either, but in my opinion we're better off without the task killers. Power management seems about the same too.
I couldn't stand the new keyboard, and noticed the contacts suggestions. I just downloaded the GIngerbread keyboard from the market today, and it works much better. Ironically, it seems to do exactly what this new keyboard should have been doing according to the update.
Honestly, this update didn't live up the hype. It's probably because Optimus S is a mid-ranger Android device.Thanked by:
