Stock apps that can be removed safely?
Is there a list of stock apps that can be removed safely such as the stock browser as long as you have a suitable replacement already installed? Actually, that's basically the only bloatware stock app I can see that isn't already removed (for obvious reasons, I guess).
Any help or suggestions on the subject would be appreciated. - 11-07-2011, 10:38 AM #2
Re: Stock apps that can be removed safely?
I have been playing with this. Assuming that you have suitable replacements, you can remove some stock apps, although doing so may take away from the functionality of the device in some cases. For example, if you remove Browser.apk, you will no longer have the option to add a bookmark/URL shortcut to a home screen if you use Opera or Dolphin.
I have also safely removed extra keyboards and the following from Reborn:
Gallery3D.apk
Gmail.apk
Talk.apk
GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapers.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
I do not suggest messing with contacts related apks.
Again, be sure you have suitable replacements already installed if you remove any of these and still want the functions to work (e.g. an image viewer if you remove Gallery3D.apk). Your mileage may vary depending on the replacement you choose. - 11-07-2011, 06:53 PM #3

What does the "Talk.apk" do?

Hmmm... I use GO SMS and I have experienced no problems with visual voicemail using Sprint-based ROMs, only with AOSP ROMs such as CM7 where it does not work anyway. But note that if you remove the stock messaging app you won't be able to use visual voicemail.
This is the Google Talk instant messaging app. Completely useless if you use other chat services and completely unnecessary if you use a different IM client (try Beem or imo). What does the "Talk.apk" do? - 02-24-2013, 09:37 PM #6

In what version of Android? This thread is freaking old and I believe my assessment was accurate at the time. A few things have changed since then and with more recent versions.
If you are inclined to spend a lot of money and want a pretty trophy with which to pass the next few years of your life that talks to you in a condescending voice, can't navigate to save its life, expects full control over all you do, demands $13 for a $3 purchase, allegedly has a single recessed button, needs an expensive computer and a credit card to do anything, hates your music and has purses designed just for it...New to LG's premium Android phone?
