Installing to an external SD card on Optimus F6

I have a new T-Mobile LG Optimus F6 with an 8GB external microSD card. I would like to install apps to this card instead of internal storage. I found some threads that explain how to do this, but it isn't working for me.

1. Install Java SDK on Windows
2. Install Android ADT sdk.
3. Install platform-tools
4. Connect phone to computer, enabling Debugging using USB
5. open command prompt at platform-tools directory
6. Type 'adb devices'
7. Nothing is listed.
8. Open Device Manager
9. Other Devices -> LGE Android Phone -> Properties -> Details -> Hardware Ids
10. Copy the two entries to adt-bundle-windows-x86_64-20130917\sdk\extras\google\usb_driver\android_winusb.inf:

; LG Optimus F6
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB\VID_1004&PID_631C&REV_0228
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB\VID_1004&PID_631C

11. Try 'adb devices' again. Nothing listed.
12. Installed the Universal ADB Driver
13. Try 'adb devices' again. Nothing listed.
14. Plugged in my Samsung Galaxy S3, ran 'adb devices' and it was listed, so the adb program can work.

I'm at a loss as to what to try now. I'd hate to have to return the phone just because the internal storage is too small.

If you open an application via Menu > System Settings > Applications > "App" , do you see an option to move over to the sd card? If so, you'll be able to move some of the app data, not all of it. It'll give some wiggle room with available data, but nothing substantial.

You can root it and use link2sd but you'll have to partition your memory card into two primary partitions. I've done it with my F3 and now I've installed a bunch of apps.

How much space would "substantial" amount be? I am looking into getting an SD card because a game I bought takes up like 800 MB. Also would a $2 SD card from china that holds 16-32 GB work? What "class" of the generic brand be good for Optimus F6?
