I used various tutorials to successfully flash a recovery and used that to do a successful nandroid backup of my rooted 2.2 Vortex. I downloaded and copied a stock rooted 2.2.2 ROM for the restore. The MD5 check for the following ROM files matched after copying them to the /sdcard/nandroid/mem=447M/stock222 folder:

boot.img
data.img
system.img

Affter selecting the restore option I quickly get an "Oops, something went wrong" error. The last part of the error log lists:

I:Boot command: boot-recovery
I:Got arguments from boot message
Fixing execute permissions for /cache
I:Set boot command "boot-recovery"
idev_get_updateStatus(--started--)
fopen error(CACHE:fota/ipth_config_dfs.txt)
upStatus=-1
No update set
idev_get_numRecovery(--started--)
fopen error(CACHE:fota/ipth_num_recovery.txt)
Command: "recovery
" "--wipe_data"

<snip>

Formatting DATA:...
mtd: not erasing bad block at 0x0a700000
Formatting CACHE:...
mtd: not erasing bad block at 0x00f40000
Fixing execute permissions for /cache

My phone returned to normal after a reboot. Can someone offer clues as to why the 2.2.2 ROM restore was unsuccessful? Thanks.

Fixed. I flashed the ROM by using the "Flash zip menu" option and feeding it a zipped ROM. Apparently the Restore option works by feeding it a previous Backup created by the recovery option.
