Does the Phone have to be on?

Does the connected phone have to be on at all times? What's the point with it having it's own number and SIM if it has to be connected at all times? Are there rumors of a stand alone update to android wear?

Don't have to if you just want calls and texts. Apps require the phone part to do all the work. It is Android Wear which is designed to be the companion to the phone, not Android watch, a watch that runs full Android OS.
