This sounds like it might be a hardware problem. You might need a new proximity sensor. I'm not sure how difficult a fix that might be. I'd back up my phone and try a factory reset first though.

What kind of box? Have you checked out freaktab.com? They have forums on a number of android TV boxes.

I wish they'd consider rotating the screen to landscape mode, using the 850 as an inspiration.
