You could also try downloading a different sms app. This was happening to me too, with my boyfriend's iPhone. I started using go sms and there's a setting to prevent large messages from splitting up. Sent from my HTC One X using Android Central Forums

Try opening the Facebook app and going into settings, and see if you can uncheck an option for "Show icon in notification bar" or something similar.
