Video Files won't play

Hi I just bought a new Moto G,2014. When I put mp4, or avi video files on my sd card I find that most files will not play (some do), I have tried many different players, and the problem still exists. I have even tried a few conversion programs, which I also get mixed results. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't had issues very often with the moto g when it comes to playing videos, but when I do I use (VLC beta for android) it plays videos very smoothly. I have only ever had problems playing .avi videos on the phone but VLC can play ALLOT! of different types of video formats. Hope this helps

I think the problem is playing from the SD card, some files play and others don't
