Here's a comparison screenshot of my Moto G home screen with Jellybean 4.3 and then after the KitKat 4.4.2 update.
I haven't changed anything on the screen, the only change is the update to KitKat.
I was trying to work out why my screen looked darker, I'm not sure if KitKat has adjusted the max brightness to lower than max brightness on Jellybean...but the black bars top and bottom on Jellybean are now graduated not completely transparent. I think that's what is causing the screen to look darker, it's as if there's a vignette, as well as the overall darker screen.

right well from what i briefly read about kitkat its supposed to one of its features, thats why its doing this. basically now apps can utilize the area at the bottom as well where the home and back etc buttons are. it mainly comes useful when reading ebooks.
