Not saving contacts, tried multiple ways

Just got my phone, loving it but and am still learning to use Android in general. I have almost all of my contacts saved previously in Outlook and want to continue using Outlook but for some unknown reason when I save a contact it shows their name then seconds later it vanishes. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with not wanting to use Google for my contacts but it could be that I haven't put an SD card in yet. Suggestions? Help?

If you're pulling the Contact List from Outlook (I'm assuming an Exchange account), check that your sync options are set to allow all devices to write and that your 'cloud' copy doesn't supersede any other changes. That's why your names might be disappearing.

Also, check that your phone's address book is set to show all contacts. Maybe you're saving the contact in a different account (Google, local only, or SIM) and not set to display those?
