So I've had my phone since Christmas and until last night had no troubles. But all of a sudden the Active Notifications stopped showing up. I REALLY hate pressing a button in order to wake the display so this really annoyed me. I was finally able to get them working again by rebooting the phone, but I'm wondering why I had to even do that. Has anyone else encountered that problem?

It's a tightly-integrated complex computer system running sophisticated software so occasional problems come with the territory. Unless this happens frequently and/or can't be solved with a reboot, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

This. If it's a problem that's solved by a quick reboot, then it's probably just a small hiccup. Nothing to worry about.

Mine never wakes when I pick it up in driving mode. Minor complaint of mine

Turn it over on the seat or your leg, then turn turn it right side up. That works for me.
