Default Moto X Won't Charge after Drain to Zero?

Attempted to recalibrate the battery % on my X yesterday doing the usual drain to zero & charge while off after auto-shutdown. Left on the charger overnight (6 hours) & would not boot in the morning. Plugged back on the charger and still showed 0% battery (), but then began charging as normal. 2.5 hours later at 100% and back to normal but not sure what happened. There was not a bad connection as the phone screen lit up initially last night indicating it was at 0% and would begin charging. Anyone else experience this? I've done this in the past with another X so not sure what to think with this one. First time attempting on this phone.

Lithium batteries are very fragile things. The chargers have to be very smart and cover for a lot of things that NiCad NiMiH etc did not have to worry about. Recall the spate of fires with Dell and other laptops a few years back. Well, discharging to an actual zero level is another dangerous thing for them.

Although, what you are referring to as Zero, would actually be a fake-zero controlled by the charger and the charger would not actually let the battery drop below about 10% remaining charge.

Manually turning the phone off - wait - on would most likely have reset it as the auto shut off is not a full shut down for everything.

It's all good, the phone charging system is working exactly as it should.

I get that it's doing this to protect the circuit, but why only sometimes? And, why last night but not this morning? Also, this phone supposedly has an LED that lights when this instance occurs (not enough juice to charge) but that didn't happen either.

I never powered on or off the phone. Simply removed from the wall charger (after 6 hours on still with 0%), tried to boot with no response, then placed back on the wall charger a second time which got the charge going. If physically just hitting the power button a couple of times with no response somehow reset how the phone accepted a charge then so be it. Still kind of strange.

I just had this exact same issue. My wife's Moto X battery died, and it would not take a charge or come back on. I tried different wall chargers and different cables and even left it plugged in over night. None of that worked. Finally we plugged it into our laptop and it started charging.

To me this seems like a bug in Motorola's battery protection system.

    Hey,

Try out below solution , It worked for me.

    Connect Moto E to charging
Press vol down key for about 30 sec.
Then simultaneously press Vol down and Power Button for 3 Minutes.
    Your Phone will start charging.

The first time it happened I couldn't find the stock charger in came with. But since then, I've had success with using the stock charger. It comes back on after being connected to the stock charger for 5-10 minutes.

This. I drained mine down on purpose last week in the car. After it was hooked up to my car charger (2.4 amp Belkin) with the factory cable for about 5 minutes, it came back. I'm sure it's built in battery protection to prevent voltage from dropping too low... since it's non-removable.

For smartphone batteries, it may not be necessary to "calibrate" by running the battery down to full shutdown state and then recharging. It could, even if only done on an occasional basis, shorten the battery longevity. Draining down to around 15-20% in many cases may be sufficient discharge to calibrate the battery, and one can avoid some of the problems that may occur if taken to shutdown mode. Otherwise, partial charges are fine--I usually charge to not much more than 90%, since it avoids some of the stresses that come with full charges, and the Moto X's battery efficiency is enough to get me through a typical day with my setup.

Lots of useful information at this site, especially the chapters involving lithium batteries used in phones, but here's some stuff regarding calibration.

About a week ago my Moto X died, I plugged it in like normal, but when I got up the next morning it still said 0%. I've trid all the button pushing and safe mode nonsense but I still can't get it to work. All I can do is hold the buttons enough for it to turn on, at that point it still says 1% charged. After a few minutes, at the most, it just dies again and stays at 0%. Please help! Its only a few months old

Try giving moto a call. A lot of people have been reporting helpfulness for their broken phones https://motorola-global-portal.custh...p/mcp/service/

Did you try the things suggested here? Charge with the charger and cable that came with the phone. Charge with a high amperage charger, like a 2A tablet charger. Charge from the USB port on a computer using the USB cable that came with the phone.

Well, I didn't believe it would work but it did. I plugged it into my computer and it started taking a charge after having the same problem everybody else was having. Suspect it will return to normal.
