Phone Won't Recognize MP3 Files

As of the last month or so I have been having some weird problems with my X. The latest is that all the MP3's I had loaded in my music folder are no longer seen by the Google Play app. In an effort to see if it was a problem with Googles Play app (which I dislike anyway) I installed Amazon's music player and another app called BlackPlayer. None of those apps see the mp3 files I have on my phone. Weird thing is that the ringtone maker app sees these files. I can also use that app to open the mp3 in edit mode, select the entire song, then save it as a music file, and then the file will show up in the music player apps.

I also can't seem to transfer mp3's with airdriod, and have had problems with downloaded notification sounds that had been on my phone for years no longer being recognized.

Anyone else had this problem?

I'm running 5.1 and the phone is a XT1060. I just cleared the cache partition and that did not help.
