Messaging App Crashes after ~10000 Messages

I noticed that the stock messaging app starts crashing after there are a little more than 10,000 messages in a thread. I then have to delete the thread and wait for it to refresh. Bit of a pain.

I am pretty tempted to start using Hangouts for SMS. Will it import my texts automatically from the stock app? If so, can I safely delete them from the stock app after the import?

Thanks!

I've seen phones take a serious performance hit when there are (way) too many messages.

I can imagine but I currently have the limit set at 10,000 messages but the stock app doesn't seem to be doing its job of deleting old ones. Sounds like a bug to me.

Ended up installing the Google Messenger App. So far I like it much better than the stock one. Should've switched sooner.
