Cases and tempered glass screen protectors are your friends, especially with phones with very small bezels. But I also realize they're called accidents for a reason and I'm sorry it happened to you..

My girlfriend's XPE also shattered from a fall. She hates having to get new phones though so I ordered a new display assembly and I'm gonna just try to repair it. Between ifixit guides and youtube, the hardest part is getting the glued-on backplate off (which I've already done in preparation for the new display using a hairdryer, oven mitt, and no small amount of patience)
