    Default Moto X Camera update

I just went into the Play Store and my camera received an update. I haven't really seen the differences that they are referring to though...

I can say it seems to pop open faster. I see a small difference, but haven't had time to play really.
Coming from a GNex, so I was happy enough from the start.

I just got the update too. There was an update in the store since 12/5 that my device wasnt able to upgrade to for whatever reason. But the one from today, 12/12, I was. From the description, i was hoping there was separate control over exposure and focus but that doesnt seem to be the case. To be honest, I'm not seeing much of anything.

I just want them to add a few manual controls. Exposure and focus separated, and iso and exposure value.

Well at least they are still working on the camera. Chris

I dont get devs. Why not make people happy and bring a nice update for camera to include all the settings. I am sure many people stay away from MX because of the camera.....so why loose sales over this.

Because the same amount of people like the simplicity and don't want to dig through settings?

I updated it too. The notes say "manual exposure control" but this is a little bit misleading - you still can't set a global exposure like on other smartphones or cameras... And there's still no controls for white balance... Come on, Motorola, giving more options to customers is always a good thing :-/

Are the issues with the camera primarily software based or is it also hardware? Do we think Motorola will continue to make incremental improvements to the Moto X camera or are they reaching a point where they will simply shift their focus to improving the camera for future models (e.g., Moto X2) to be released next year?

I am pleased that they continue to tweak the camera app. I have gotten the shake to open motion down pretty good and with this update I am amazed at how much faster the already fast opening action is. I don't expect stellar pic quality from a phone camera, if I want that I will use a quality digital camera. The drag to set focus/exposure point in the last update is very useful - I would however, like a few more adjustments available like white balance, backlight, etc.

I think it's inconsistent. It can take fantastic pictures, but sometimes it'll take a bad one when you've done everything you need to do to take a good one.

My HTC Rezound never got the white balance right on Auto. Once I learned that I needed to set white balance manually I got much better results. Downside was when I went to take a quick pic I'd often forget to check what I had left it set to.

Maybe if Motorola adds more user access to settings in future updates, people will get results closer to what they're looking for.

I only received my Moto X last night and didn't have much time to play with it before today's camera update. But did the camera allow you to drag the reticle around to adjust focus and white balance before this update?
I figure that's what they meant by manual focus and white balance.

That depends on your own perception of what is "fine", as well as what you're using for comparison purposes. I have a few spare smartphones at home (a few iPhones and even a Nokia Lumia 920, I also had Xperia Z but gave it away) and a calibrated monitor on my PC. I also own a most recent model of MacBook Pro and previous-gen iPad (their displays are not calibrated but they are very good "by default"). The Moto X's camera consistently produces pretty poor photos (on average worse than other smartphones that I have) - poor white balance, poor exposure, lots of "noise" in low lighting, even after all of the latest updates. And it's not only my particular device - I've seen samples by other Moto X owners, including in these forums, they look similarly bad on all my displays on these devices. The camera quality is the weakest point of this model (including the controls in stock camera app), totally negating the awesome "flip-twice-to-turn-on" feature. Hopefully Motorola will do more improvements to it or change it completely in next model...

    1) does the camera have a macro mode? my atrix 4g has that and use it all the time for food porn and other stuff. works great.

    2) can you take back-to-back pictures as fast as iphone? (the camera on my atrix is super sluggish)

    3) is the general consensus that the camera shortcomings are software related? is the hardware comparable to most phones?

I hope they continue to update the camera. It's truly the Achilles heel of an otherwise perfect device.

    No it does not.

You can use 'burst mode' just hold the screen and it will snap snap snap pretty quickly.

Not sure on the hardware, though some software updates did help it some.
