    Default Software update issue?

Hello, new guy here. New to Android and new to the Moto X. I'm activated, that was no problem. But I noticed that my Moto X arrived with 4.2.2 ... I still haven't got a prompt to upgrade to Kit Kat. When I go into "About phone" > "System updates" ... under Software update it says that an update is currently being downloaded. You will be notified when the download is complete. Well, I don't see any kind of progress meter or anything indicating that a download is going on. Also, it says "download failed" under Status. Is something wrong, or do I need to just be patient and wait for my phone to prompt me to upgrade?

    Thanks

Did you try rebooting and checking for update again?

I'm assuming a reboot is done by just holding down the power button? I did that. Still getting the same message under System Updates. At the top it says, "continue checking system update" ... and then under Software Update it's still saying "an update is currently being downloaded. You will be notified when the download is complete". Just seems like something is wrong somewhere ...

Aren't you supposed to get a prompt when the phone first boots up?

when i got my x this week it started download 4.4 only minutes after i turned the phone on. it shows a download icon in the notification bar and how far along the download is. when it's downloaded it prompts you to either install the download now or wait until later. with the error you are getting, and the fact that you already tried powering down and starting back up to find the same error, I would do a factory reset. Again, that's what I would do, not saying that will actually work. I just don't know what other options you have unless someone chimes in who has had this problem. after a factory reset, if you were still getting the same error, then return to store/factory may be necessary. I'm assuming your phone is still on 4.2.2 and is trying to update to 4.4?

Under Software Update and Latest System Update Information, under Status it says "download failed" code 450. And when I powered the device on initially, I never saw any of the things you mentioned. Again, under Software Update on my phone it says that the source is Verizon Wireless and the vendor is Motorola. And this is bizarre, but when I tap on System Updates at the top, it says that there's an update currently being downloaded - it's said that since last night.

Were you in an area where you had a good signal? If you were in a fringe area and signal connection was sporadic when downloading began, it could have missed a piece of code causing the error message. Make sure you're in a strong signal area and have the battery charged up and try again. If it does fail again, you might have a defective unit.

it might be a pita but, my next step would be a factory reset. that will take it right back to the out of box state it was in when you first got it. then, you should be able to download and install the new update.

So I decided to call Motorola directly for help. They were unable to manually push the update to me. Apparently, this is a known issue and they're working on it. I guess I'm not the only one that's having this problem. So now I've been "escalated to level 3" technical support and they're supposed to call me in 24-48 hours. And yes, I'm right next to my modem/router and getting full signal strength - so that part shouldn't be a problem. The tech support person says it's not an issue with my device (so far, anyway). She also said that doing a factory reset is not going to help so don't bother.

Ugh, was really hoping my converting over to Android wouldn't start off like this. But, here I am. In the meantime, I won't be downloading any apps until this is resolved. I haven't even signed into Google yet because I wanted to wait until I was on Kit Kat.

that's too bad man. sucks to have to start off like this. I wonder if "not" signing into google has anything to do with it? I doubt it, but I would try anything at this point. I'm not patient. haha.

On a whim, I decided to pop into the Verizon store and see if they had any tricks up their sleeve. Fortunately, I got someone that knew what they were doing and I'm squared away now. Turns out that I had a bad SIM card for whatever reason - seems odd, considering the phone is brand new. So, he changed out my SIM card and I was able to see the software download in progress. Kit Kat is now installed.

    Thanks

The way I understand it is, the updates are pushed to your device automatically when they become available.

Sounds like the OP got squared away, but for anyone else with similar problems, here is something to try out before resorting to factory reset...

    1. Make sure you're in a location where you have a wifi connection. (Some updates only download via wifi)

    2. Boot into recovery. I don't own a Moto X, so I'm not sure the specific way to do it, but it generally involves holding down certain buttons on boot-up. Often, a Google search for "boot [phone model] to recovery" will get your answer for you.

    3. Clear the cache partition. This is like a "temp" directory on your Android system, and is also where the updates are downloaded to for staging. If you have a corrupt update download mucking things up, this will remove it. Wiping the cache will NOT remove any user apps or data, and is generally a pretty harmless procedure.

    4. Reboot the phone normally and do the update check again.
