It would be best to wait until the unlocked Moto Z starts shipping to customers so that we can see what's really up as these are just speculations.

Any time you slow the CPU clock you reduce the drain on the battery, phone or other computer. It also reduces the speed of the app running - whether this reduces performance or not depends on the app (if most of its time is spent waiting for you to do something, it won't - if most of its time is spent "crunching numbers", it will.

I can't address whether unlocked = underclocked in a Z, I don't have any to check.

Well, I have the unlocked UK version and it flies. It's never shown so much as a hiccup. Battery life is stellar for the size of the battery too.

If this is partly from underclocking then I'm all for it.

The Z certainly seems faster than the 10 (which I had previously). It's also a way better phone:

Better screen
Faster
Better battery life - somehow!!?
Feels less like a brick
Hasn't yet scratched just by being looked at

Motorola web site lists the Unlocked Moto Z Snap Dragon 820 at 1.8 GHZ

Amazon has it listed at 2.2Ghz and B&H Photo at 2.15 Ghz lol

The Moto Z Droid and Force Droid are both listed at 2.2Ghz
