    Cool Droid 2 R2-D2 Update

I just received a notification on my R2-D2 that an update, 4.5.622.en.US, is ready to be installed. Does anyone know what this is all about? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Same phone and same update. I didn't really read the notification...I just blindly clicked OK and about 10 minutes later it was done. Been searching all over to find out what the update did and can't find anything.

I'm not really sure...I checked the Android version, and I've got 2.3.4 after the update. I don't really remember, but I thought that I had 2.3.3 before the update. Am I just remembering wrong?

The update installed for me without any issues, at about 8PM yesterday. No obvious differences or issues, but I hope it fixes the occasional crash/reboot on opening the slide-out keyboard.

You seem to be right. I have 2.3.3 now and have not updated it to the new one yet. Actually, I can't. Seems some change I did when rooted messed it up so the update will not install. Ugh.

Thanks for locating this. The most obvious thing that I noticed is that my Yahoo email will actually notify me about a new email. That stopped working when I installed Gingerbread. However, the changes to the camera settings are definitely a winner.

One thing that I did notice is that it broke my root access (as it typically does), however I'm having a hard time getting that back.

So how come the R2D2 gets an update, but not the D2, which is the same software?

I found a possible major flaw with this update. The sounds like ringtone or notification tones just randomly stop working. I got the update last night and discovered the problem this morning when someone texted me. I thought perhaps I just missed the sound but no, they texted me two more times as I was watching my phone and no sound. I had to power off/on the phone to get the notification tone working again and everything seemed to be fine... til now.

Someone called me and I didn't hear it. I don't always hear my phone but I generally feel it as I also have it set to vibrate so I thought it was odd I didn't hear or feel it. So I called myself from work and sure enough, no ringtone and no vibration. I once again had to power off/on my phone to get it working again.

My phone was not in silent mode either time or any other kind of special mode. All my ringtones and sounds are still set the same. No difference in what I had before the update and after but if I have to keep resetting my phone multiple times a day to get my sounds back, I'm going to be highly ticked off.

Anyone else having this problem with their r2d2?

The one plus I've found is my menu backlight keys don't randomly go off and I have to open my keyboard or hit the power button to get those to come on again.

So, does anyone know how to force this update? I wound up messing around and having to SBF because I obviously did something wrong and the system would attempt to install this update but would never get past 25% complete. The 2.3.3 update went back in fine, but now my phone will not see the new update. I have tried changing my date, etc but it never works.

I totally just had to reset my phone again. This sucks. Any way to revert back?

I wish I could get rid of this update. I'm in the same boat as Kariyack, plus it can't be rerooted. Unfortunately, I'm reading about the Droid X that they broke the ability to flash an older sbf as well and it bricks the phone. So i wouldn't recommend trying to flash back to an older sbf until people find a way around that.
Looks like it might be time to try to convince the boss to get me a new phone.

Yup, my root is gone and I ran MotorolaOneClickRoot twice to no avail.

    At least I'm not alone.

My alarm did manage to go off this morning. Late yesterday it dawned on me that this was why I didn't hear my alarm yesterday morning. I'm not sure if I fixed it by the random stuff I was doing or I just got lucky and it worked itself out but so far, I haven't had to reset the phone today at all *knock on wood*.

But things you can try that I did just in case it fixed it. I pulled the battery twice yesterday and the sd card twice (not that that should've made a difference but I did it anyways) and let it sit that way for a few minutes and then put it back together. I went into the battery mode screen and didn't change anything but I clicked on it anyways just to see if there was an option that turned off sounds once the phone became idle after x# of hours. And any games that I played on a regular basis (like wwf or scramble with friends) I enabled the annoying sounds effects.

Now again, whether that really fixed it or not, I'll know by the end of the day. But, for now, it's working so you can try that if you wanted to.

    How's this for tragedy:

I just rooted my R2-D2 four days ago and was loving it. It was so much faster at everything! Then three days ago I got the notice we all got, that there was an update available. I couldn't make it go away permanently, and I figured there might be some real system improvement in it, so I researched the update and found this thread but there were only two posts at that point. So I rerooted my phone and performed the update. The phones seems a little faster, but the root is not broken. I got to enjoy a rooted phone for 18 hours.

Has anyone heard about any exploits for 4.5.622 yet? I really want to root it again. Thanks!

I've come back to update and say that it worked fine for a few days but this morning, I had no sound again. I tried playing music to see if that would activate the sound again without having to reset the phone and it told me that the file type (which was mp3) was not a supported type for the player. Odd, right?

The only thing I changed between the time I did all that previously and now was I turned on my auto task killer again. So I've once again disabled it, reset the phone, and my sound is working again. And hopefully my sound will stay working permanently.

well you probably shouldn't root, anyways till new SBF is found
    or other compatible SBF
the Droid x users found a milestone x SBF that works, when their latest update, blocked root and SBF options
