My brother-in-law has the Droid 3, he asked me if there is any way to turn the phone on/off without using the power button at the top. Is there an app or anything he can download where he can just touch the screen to turn it on and off. He is very new to Android and smartphones, he wouldn't think of rooting or anything. Any suggestions/ideas? Thanks

I don't know of any programs but the side volume keys wake it up.

I don't know about taping the screen to make it work , but you can download WidgetLocker & then set the phone to unlock with the volume buttons in addition to the power button

there's an app called Tap Tap App

it uses the proximity sensor to turn on. i have been using it for a few months on a few different devices...the Fascinate, Xperia Play, Inc 2...it's worked almost flawlessly, and i highly recommend it

in turn, i use Screen Off and Lock to lock the screen
