I'm about to end my contract with Verizon and was wondering if I could just use one of their pre-paid plans. I saw an unlimited one for $50 a month that looked pretty good but just wanted to make sure it would work before I went out and bought.

So far, one rep has just flat out said "there is no pre-paid option for your Droid Maxx at this time" which doesn't really make sense since a prepaid phone can work on a normal Verizon plan. No reason it should work in reverse.

There's no reason it wouldn't work, other than Verizon wants to lock customers into contracts. If customers were to buy a phone off contract and then go prepaid, most prepaid plans cost less and don't guarantee Verizon income for a set period. Usually you don't see flagship devices offered for prepaid service until they're not sold by the carrier (they move them from general to prepaid sales) anymore or they've just lost popularity.

That's kinda what I was thinking. It wouldn't be that much of a problem to go to another prepaid service since I'm porting my number to Google Voice and just need the data, but it would be nice to keep that Verizon coverage. I'll just see what happens next weekend when this all goes down.

EDIT: second rep also just kept repeating "the Droid MAXX is a 4G phone and is not compatible with the prepaid service." no amount of me prying would get any other answer or explanation out of her.

Correct. Verizon does not offer 4G LTE smartphones for prepaid service. Prepaid smartphone lines are 3G only.

That shouldn't prevent me from adding a droid Maxx to a prepaid plan though. Not sure why they are all saying no to it.

Can I bring my own phone to a prepaid Smartphone plan?

Yes, you can bring any active or inactive Verizon Wireless 3G device* to a prepaid Smartphone plan. Activate your device online.

*Excludes Windows Mobile, 4G-enabled Smartphones, and push-to-talk devices (excluding BlackBerry® push-to-talk, which can be activated).

I may be wrong but my guess is Verizon disabled SIM cards from accessing the prepaid service. That's why you couldn't use a Droid Maxx even on 3G.
