I hike and backpack. I use My Tracks to record my travel. I am in areas with no cell reception. After 1.5 days my battery is about dead.
Turning on airplane mode turns off GPS too, but I read someone had figured a way around this. Finally after trial and error I have a repeatable solution.

Phone: Motorola Razr Maxx w/ICS

1. Settings: Data Usage: Mobile Data OFF

2. Settings: Airplane Mode: ON

3. GPS Test app: touch GPS State button: Location options: Turn off Verizon and wifi location (GPS satellites only)

4. GPS Test app: Return to home page: verify acquisition of satellites.

Be sure you have previously loaded Google offline maps of the area you will be traveling. You need data/wifi/Internet to get maps.
