I don't use Hangouts because I didn't want to sign up to google+. I've been using Textra since I started having issues with stock text app. It works pretty well. You can customize colors and all. Not badfr a free app

Go into your wireless settings and make sure mobile data is on.

Txt messaging doesn't use mobile data. It takes advantage of available bandwidth in the normal communications between your phone and the CDMA voice network.

Txt messaging doesn't use mobile data. It takes advantage of available bandwidth in the normal communications between your phone and the CDMA voice network.

MMS does, though it doesn't count against caps, so if you want to send and receive them all, it's best to keep mobile data on.
