the directions say to go to camera setting and press gear icon in right corner. Droid does not have a gear icon in the camera app

Welcome to Android Central! I assume you're trying to connect a selfie stick. Open the Camera app and bring up the camera menu in whatever way you bring it up. The selfie stick manual mentions the gear icon because lots (but not all) of camera apps use that convention. Look in the options there for the volume button setting, and make sure it's set as the shutter release.
