I know it's been a long time since you posted this, but it means gaining root access - access to the system files. This allows for making changes that you normally couldn't, which lets you do more, but does also increase the chances of messing something up. Last I checked, if you're on 4.4.4, there isn't a way to root, but if you're still on an earlier version of Android, Sunshine works very well (worked on my Droid Maxx with 4.2.2 like 6 months ago.)
