Advice For First Time Root?

I'm looking on many places and seeing that most tutorials are dated in 2010, and this makes me a little nervous. I'm getting a Droid soon and had a laundry list of ideas to play with on it, but want to be sure I'm headed in the right direction. I'm particularly concerned with the FRS that is built into the Droid. This is what I want to do out of the box:

1. Root
2. Backups: just to cover my butt in case something goes wrong!
3. ROMs: Particularly CM6 or 7, any advice?
4. Overclock: Not much, just a little bit (800 MHz?)

What's the best direction to head in? I'm not a novice in terms of computers, so I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty, just want to be sure I'm headed in the right direction!

This seems like the most detailed so far, just out of date? Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

That is perfect! Thats how I rooted my phone and should still work now even with the 2.2.2 OS version. You should download ROM Manager from the market and flash Clockwork recovery. And you can also download and flash ROMs very easily for first time flashers. I'm on the latest CM7 nightlie now and don't have any problems, but if you like to run a lot of widgets I'd recommend a Froyo ROM, and you can overclock your phone with custom ROMs without buying a overclock app within the ROM settings.

Thanks scarryman04!

I completely didn't realize that CM7 has built in overclocking capabilities! Is that unique to CM7, or does CM6 have it as well? I haven't had an android device yet, though I can say I like a clean environment to work in; probably a handful of icons, a to do widget, and some toggles.

Also, I'm upgrading from a jailbroken iPod Touch G1 (300 MHz processor hurts so bad!), and one of the things I may miss the most is SBSettings and it's wonderful Fast Notes capability. For those that haven't tasted the forbidden fruit, SBSettings allows you to swipe across the top of the screen to get a menu of toggles and docked applications, one of which is a little notes application. All it does is keep a section of text even after reboot. Can something like that be added to the pull down menu in CM6/7?

Yar, thar be tinkering ahead! I'll either update this thread or start a new one when I begin my first foray into rooting!
