I'm sure someone will figure it out before long, just as it was with 2.0.1

hopefully, that recovery thing is too big of a risk for me to take to just gain root access

Possible? yes. Likely? Depends on what your definition of near future is.

I agree that it was faster and easier to root 2.1 than 2.0.1.

X1000.. It is easy as he!! now compared to what it was with 2.01... If you cant figure out how to follow the instructions on here...
You should not be messing with root in the first place.. Compared to some of the stuff you will have to be typing in order to push and pull apps and such, this is a cake walk.

I have been following the videos cory posted above in the forum. I understand the 2.1 root process, my question is do I need to do nandroid backup as well? or can I just jump to the installing custom roms video?
    Thanks

I'd say just use ROM manager and it can make backups for you.

How can you guys possibly say it's easier to root 2.1 than 2.0.1? I achieved root in 2.0.1 by installing the SMUpdater app and letting it do all the work.

There must be something I'm missing here.

    UPDATE:

I went ahead and rooted 2.1. It is not difficult at all. Even so, it's still requires a lot more work than rooting 2.0.1

Its not harder just different. With 2.0,1 you are using an app on your phone to do it. With 2.1 your using a program on your computer. If your not able to access a computer when you want to root then it will obviously not be able to be done but they aren't too different in concept.
