Just don't think it's the screen protector.
If held at the right angle, you can see the sensor. Is the glass blocking it? I had the same issue with a screen protector and my 5X.

The usual reason for this is a screen protector which is covering (and thus, confusing) the phone's proximity detector...
I will admit, it does seem counter-intuitive, since glass is clear. It wasn't until I pulled my protector off my Nexus 5X, that the sensor worked like it should.
Hmmmm, no idea how you put into safe mode before powering off?I had this problem you need to put phone in safe mode then turn phone off. I don't remember exactly how I did it but Verizon tech suggested it and it worked this is done first before doing the hard reset.
