Is battery saver mode really turning off data?

I have my phone on that battery saver mode where it is supposed to turn off the data connection after 30 min of inativity. After 30 minutes nothing changes, the 3g(data) icons remain and if I open the browser it works without having to turn it back on.

Does it automatically turn the data back on when you start using the phone?

i'm not sure how it works, but i dont like it...i had a hard time keeping my 3G signal on last night, even while using the phone, then i noticed the battery setting was on battery saver...i switched it to performance and i have yet to drop any data connection

Yes when your phone is idle it will stop service. If your looking at screen then phone is not idle. When I pu my X after awhile and launch gtalk I have the lost service message

I don't think its working I let my phone time out to my battery settings and sent myself a gtalk from wifes phone and I got it along with notification.so my data is not off
