Was not good enought to just clear the caches, I had to hunt down three corrupt picture files that buggered up everything....soon as the cache rebuilt I was at square one again. I used the 3d gallery to find the pics that did not display right then deleted those pics (they were in a temp folder)

It worked for me also...unfortunately I lost all my custom ringtones and the "droid" tone. Weird. How do I get that back?

Updated: It just took 5 minutes for them to show up....nevermind. Haha!

    Gallery
    Media Container Service

Then I restarted phone by holding down power button, clicking Power Off, then held it again to turn on and working great! It did take a few minutes for the Gallery to get all the thumbnails again the first time I started it, but works!
I was afraid I deleted all files on SD but they are all still there. Just be patient, will take several minutes for Gallery to repopulate.
It solved my problem as well. Thank you for posting this recommendation. Only downside so far seems to be my ringtones and notification sounds are all whacked out.

+1, This is the exact thing that I had happened, 3D Gallery works perfectly so I deleted stock and use it, I prefer it anyway after using it.

You could also attach the X in USB mode to your computer, open the X's SD card as a flash drive, then open either the photographs or DCIM folders to view your pictures. Find the problem ones and delete there.

    Red face thank you!!!

Sailmaker, thank you, thank you, thank you!! It worked, I'm so excited! Just a note for everyone else, when he says be patient while it's loading, BE PATIENT! I was ready to give up, because it kept saying "loading", for what seemed like forever; (patience is not one of my virtues, lol!) but when I checked, there were all my pics! I'm so happy! Thanks again!

In my case, it was not a problem photo causing this issue. The gallery was not opening for other reasons. To be more specific, after I installed a bad download of a market app (which was broken and the dev had to update twice after that), I immediately noticed my gallery had this issue. This makes me think that app screwed up my media cache & data. Sailmaker's solution worked for me -- once again!!

From what I've learned, you need to start out with an empty folder first. Then copy the .nomedia file to it. Then copy your media files to it. After that, any photos/music/media in that folder won't show up in the gallery. After I started doing it that way, it works for me every time.

I left everything in the folder and put the .nomedia file in it and it didnt work. I had to put a period before text for a folder label. So it would be .folder instead of just folder.

Yes, putting a "." before the folder name will work too. But sometimes certain apps that use predetermined folder names for media do not have the "." before the folder name. So in that case, putting the ".nomedia" file in the empty folder first, before any media files, will work.

Thank you so much, sailmaker. That did the trick. Wish I had found this earlier. I have been having this problem for about a month now. But have to busy to go to Verizon, which I know would have reset my phone.

Sailmaker: are you 100000% positive the clear cache & clear data doesn't erase all on the sd card? Im nervous it will. Im having the same gallery issue. But when I go to the gallery app clear cache isn't clickable.

tbok73, you are safe with that. Just clear the Data then if the Cache is grayed out. You will not lose anything on your SD card. I've had to do that many times. The only thing you will notice is that you might have to re-setup your ringtones, as I believe they are stored there also. But this method does resolve the gallery problem without having to do a factory reset.

Clearing the gallery cache and data will not delete your SD card contents. Not even a factory reset with clearing the data and cache will do that so don't worry. If cache is not lit up that means it is already cleared out. You're only clearing the data and cache for the app......nothing that will affect your SD card.

I just had the same Gallery issue pop up this morning, and after reading through all of these pages was able to diagnose and remedy the problem:

I have Gun Bros. on my phone (a Glu app), and the newest update added a "Glu" logo pic into my gallery. I installed Gallery 3D, deleted that one pic, and presto!

Thank you all for your help (whether you knew you helped or not!) :-)

It looks like there's common ground in this problem... Some games overload the gallery with images. Clearing the cache gets rid of the debris. Cleans it out so the Gallery can function normally.

Perhaps there's a setting in these offending games that will clear the cache on closing.

Until minutes ago I had the same problem. The problem developed when I cleared the data. I found and applied this solution (interestingly, step 1 is was what caused the problem (I have no idea why I did that in the first place), but executing the next two steps and power-cycling the device recovered from the problem):

Actually here is a trick I have figured out, I have noticed that the issue does not appear to be the image files as users have been thinking has been causing this issue. It appears that apps have a tendency to use the .nomedia files to hide their files from the explorer and this seem to actually cause the gallery crash issue, to test this I made a number on .nomedia files and dropped them in a number of folders and almost instantly my gallery crashed... After clearing cache it was resolved because the system rescanned the files and notices the .nomedia files correctly.

It seems that hiding files that the gallery has already cached makes the gallery think that the files are corrupt.

Thank you for the info it worked for me. The app that keeps causing the problem for me is Vignette, a camera app. its a shame because that app takes beautiful pictures but this is the third time it corrupted my media. Before this fix I re loaded the the operating system on my droid x and I was hesitant to use the app but now its easy to repair so ill reload the app.
    Thanks again.
