Gingerbread on the Droid X, whats new
Ok so I just updated. Now Im trying to find out what changes there are to the phone. So far I see the Motorola logo on boot is now blood red. It seems like boot time takes a bit longer. There is an overall darker theme to the phone colors now (anyway to change this). Transitions between screens and scrolling appears to be smoother. So what else is there?

A ton of back in performance. Let the OS settle, and enjoy a smoother experience than froyo. The web browsing has speed up, and eye candy, animations, and options are abound. I love the new social widgets....best out period.

Customizable Dock on home screen. Customizable Profiles. Might just be me but ringtones / sounds seem louder out of the speaker. I am sure there is much more but this is what I have noticed thus far. Of course besides everything being much smoother/quicker

Should be able to take screenshots without rooting now, right?

Quadrant scores (yeah, I know they can be gamed) with this new version are SICK. Just pulled an 1847.

Well one new thing I've noticed and definitely do not like is that there is now a refresh symbol in my task bar 100% of the time (the double rounded/circular arrows). They never change so as far as I can tell they aren't actually doing anything other than driving me nuts. I truly can't stand the constant indication that something is refreshing when it is not.
If it matters or anyone has any ideas, it is on the right side of the task bar and it's always the furthest left from whatever services icons I have on. So in my case it is directly next to the Bluetooth icon. - 04-13-2011, 06:07 AM #13
Hey French, my phone was doing this as well. I read in another post that the only way to stop this is to factory reset your phone. After reading that I did the reset and the sync symbol shows up when its supposed to. Yea resetting your phone is a pain but it will solve that problem.

does it not make you guys wonder that so many people have this sync symbol issue? how could they release this as official if so many people have had to wipe since the first leask because of the same issue. i am sure word would have reached them

ohmygawd this is the LAST thing I wanted to read about that sync symbol!! I think I have 200 apps on here and I'm not rooted so I would have to do it very manually.
 I am glad that I'm not alone and that I'm not crazy, either...but I can't believe this!!
So, I got such fast help with the constant sync icon...anyone care to explain what the "wave" icon thing is? It looks kind of like a 3...it's zig-zag and there are 3 lines together. It now also shows up to the right of the task bar but this one is in between the bluetooth and 3G icons. I suspect it has something to do with Bluetooth but don't know for sure.
ETA: I'm an *****...it's the vibrate notification. But I'm going to leave the post here in case anyone else stumbles on this and wonders like I did.
EDITED TO ADD: As far as the sync icon not going away, per another post I saw where someone said they went into settins>manage applications>all and "force closed" blurcontacysnc...I went in to try this and couldn't find that but I did find something called "work contacts". Force closing this does make the sync icon go away. Unfortunately it still returns. But I'm going to continue to pursue the force close thing before I resort to a complete wipe.Last edited by French; 04-13-2011 at 07:45 AM.

You wont have to install your apps manually again if you wiped your phone. After you sign into your gmail account your phone will begin to redownload your apps (probably best if you turned wifi on for this). It took me about 20 minutes for all my apps to download and install (along with my contacts syncing).
And dont worry about that icon for the vibe. My phone is always vibrate and I didn't realize what that icon was until I accidentally took it off vibrate.
Edit: I also want to ask anyone who installed GB. Have you noticed a difference in battery life? I feel like my battery is dying faster than normal.Last edited by Argodabar; 04-13-2011 at 08:51 AM.

Umm, everything is way faster. There are FAR less crashes (if i made it 3 days before without a crash it was a good 3 days). The battery life is amazing. I used to have to use Juice Defender to toggle my data on/off just to THINK about making it through the day. Now I've only hit one day in the 3 weeks of having it that I got down into the red, and that was through really heavy usage.

While a wipe is a pain, when I did it the sync symbol issue went away. If losing everything is a problem, then back everything up. As far as battery life, yesterday seemed to be bad battery life, but thats only because I couldn't stop putting the phone down. So far I've been at 80% since 6:30 am pst and at 10:12 am pst I'm still at 80% with calls, checking FB and texting. So far so good

In regards to battery life.....Every update has bad battery life when I first get it as I am playing with the phone more than I usually do. Guess I won't really see the impact until a week or so after the "newness" wears off.

When the update finally pushes through, will I need to back up my Angry Birds progress? If so, how do I do that?

I may recommend titanium, and free version allows 5 app backups, but data should transfer fine, no factory reset should be needed.

Do not restore settings from Titanium Backup or any backup apps for email accounts, input them fresh because this causes this to happen, if you go to Settings / Applications / Manage Applications / All Tab / Account Storage and force close you will see that the sync will go away... But this doesn't fix it just shows where issue is, eventually GB uses a different format for email settings that causes this.
Reset and input settings manually...
