Blank screen for 15-20 seconds

I have a Motorola Droid. When I remove it from the docking unit, end an internet browsing session, or open or close the keyboard, the Home screen remains blank (no icons) for 15-20 seconds. The Phone screen and function is normal when selected. I have removed the Task Killer and various programs to no avail. I have also moved all programs possible to the SD card. What can I do short of a hard reset which will lose apps and data?

Remove any Widgets/icons from your home screen that you don't absolutely need.
