    Default 2.2.1 Update Discussion

Now that the 2.2.1 update might be rolling out, figured it would be a good time so start a thread for discussion on the update. Post any findings in here!

I just got the notification and began the application process (note that I am not rooted, but WAS about a month ago, but am back to stock). I walked away while it was doing its' thing and came back to find that I am stock on an infinite boot loop of the Droid Eye. I've powered down, battery pulled, etc. I booted into recovery mode and while I do have the option of booting to the update.zip, I have no recollection of what the file could be. Could it be the newly downloaded Verizon update?

I woke up this morning about 4:30 and found my notification for the upgrade. I started the upgrade, rolled over for a little while, and when I looked again (about an hour later) it was all ready to go. So far, I have not had any problems or hiccups. This version seems a bit smoother than 2.2 and so far, I'm liking it!!

^ Same here, I actually thought it was Gingerbread!

Is this update getting prepared for it?

    Default Just got mine :)

I was literally just reading these postings when I looked down at my phone and had the notification. Sweet; I'll let everyone know how it's going after I've played with it for a bit. Christmas a little early!

is this all we get? Will we get 2.3? the original droid should get 2.3 because it doesn't use a skin.

    Default Quick observations,

Only played with the update for about half an hour but here's what I've observed so far.
    1. Seems a little smoother, can't tell if this is just in my head or not, and it could be the result of the reboot too, but droid does seem more fluid and stable.
    2. Gmail has a nice improvement bringing some of the benefit of priority inbox to the phone.
    3. The "News and Weather" widget looks the same but I did notice one thing; it used to be if I clicked a headline in the widget I would then have to scroll down to find the actual story. Now it looks like if the headline is on the visible part of the widget when you click it, it is the first story you read.
That's about all I've been able to observe, I'm really curious if there really is a stability and or speed increase or if it's just my imagination. Looking forward to finding out more from anyone else!

    Default Maps

This biggest update is to Google Maps. They changed the way it downloads the map. It is no longer a bunch of images; it is now binary, and the phone renders the map. This saves a ton of bandwidth and is a ton faster.

I got notification to update but when I let it, it went into recovery(clockworkmod) and failed to apply the update. Anyone know how to get a direct DL for the update?

You're right! Just opened maps to try it based on what you said and it is a ton faster - thanks!

The update did not work on my phone. It got stuck and so I just let it run all night until the battery ran out. Apparently the battery REALLY ran out because it took a good 15 minutes of charging before the phone turned on. Maybe I shouldn't have deleted the Amazon app...

Anyone able to get the update to come through from a rooted 2.3.320 X? Or do I need a direct SBF and use RSDLite?

I saw the notification when I woke up this morning around 5:45am EST. I immediately got excited thinking this was a gingerbread update. I backed up everything just in case. I rebooted the phone, started the upgrade went into the shower while the phone was plugged in on a full battery. When I came out of the shower it was all done.

I did notice that load up the home screen and switching between screens is more fluid.

News & Weather was more fluid. Wifi was definately faster. Web browsing on WIFI was faster than on my 3rd Gen Ipod Touch. Pages loaded in full faster, also emails on Exchange with graphics actually loaded faster or in full.

Yahoo mail seems faster as well.

Map- I am inside now...that seems slower. Did not load GPS as fast but the map did load (binary?)

All I know is that the screen to screen is much more fluid.

I had my notification on Wednesday morning when I woke up. I was hoping it would fix my ActiveSync\Exchange email sync issues I've had since the last update "broke" it. Initially, I was still receiving sync errors - but, after removing and re-adding my exchange account things have been working GREAT for two days now!

As far as the maps go - I don't notice anything different. But that could just be me. I use them infrequently enough that I may never notice a change in performance.

Sorry to get so excited. Checked my android version...still says 2.2 not 2.2.1, so I don't know what happened. I did have my root on at the time of instal and reboot.

I had stock 2.2 rooted with Soup Or Root. Got the update notification and let it have it's way with my Droid. Now on 2.2.1 but root is lost. Will try Super One Click over the weekend.

Just got the update this morning and noticed that Maps has been using a lot of battery power.

I was on GPS for half hour which only uses about 10% battery, but instead Maps has used 40%. Also, my Maps still looks like before...haven't noticed anything different.

I am rooted and got update notification last night. When I hit update, it went into install mode and then frozen for a while. I have to re power off to use the phone. Now I do not see that update notification. Where I can find the updated file. If some one has it please post the link for it.

I LOVE THIS UPDATE. One reason, no more home screen draw delays.

They messed it up on the last update, about 5-10 times a day, when leaving an app I would be looking at a blank homescreen for about 4-5 seconds.

Not the case now, its instant and super snappy! Love it!

    Update on my battery:

It's nearing the end of the day and my battery is completely drained. I will try doing a complete uninstall of Maps and then reinstall it and see if it fixes the problem.

Same here - I was getting really frustrated staring at the blank home screen whenever I exited out of an app, but this update looks to have fixed that! Very exciting!
