So I have a 8G micro sd card and iam only putting movies on it. I am using Format Factory to convert the movies to MP4. 1 of my movies is Bolt (about 800mb) and Social Network (around 900mb) both are good quality. I just formatted Limitless and it is 2.1G. The quality is amazing but I just don't want it taking up that much space.

What have you found to be a good resolution for the Xoom? Or a better format for the movies?

What settings are you using in Format Factory? I'd like to start ripping DVDs and would like to find a good balance between video quality and size.

I don't use Format Factory. Xilisoft software allows for adjustment of final size. I just go for something around 1GB or lower. It's only a 10 inch screen, so I don't miss HD. Traditional TV resolution is fine for planes and hotel rooms.

When I want to watch a particular movie in HD, using the HDMI output to a hotel TV, I'll just bite that bullet and store the large file. I don't believe there is a "magic bullet" compression algorithm that will give you a two hour movie in HD for less than 2GB.

Is this the software you use? DVD Ripper - DVD ripping software, rip DVD to AVI, MPEG, DivX Pretty expensive, but it may prove to be worth it just for the removal of the hassle factor!

I agree with your point about HD not being necessary on such a small device. If I want HD, I'll watch a real TV.

Does Xilisoft make this easy, or will I need to set specific parameters like I do in Format Factory?

Sometimes it's just easier to pay. ;-)

I've heard good things about DVD Catalyst as well.

You'll need to set specific parameters with Xilisoft. Some experimenting will be needed.

I just set it to format the movie to mp4. There is no setting for the xoom but there is one for the iPad but it formats in avi. They have different setting for mobile devices. The best one I can find is 800x480 mp4.

Ok just finished. I formated it to 800x480 and it went from 2.93GB to 1.27GB. And it still looks good. I formated it under Archos 5,605,7,705.

Ok just finished formating all my movies. I also was able to increase the volume.

Excellent... I'm going to try these settings tomorrow evening after my WiFi XOOM arrives. It'll be a great companion on my trip to Texas next weekend!
