Is there a way to have the Hot Spot automatically turned on when I power up my standard, out of the box, 4G Xoom on?

I don't think so. I have to activate mine every time I want to use it.

My wife struggles with technology, and sometimes she gets up before I do and she wants to do her e-mail with a laptop. We travel a bit and this Xoom serves as my ISP, this creates a little problem. She's intelligent enough to learn the tablet, she just chooses not to!

I know, its silly, but were retired and try to keep things simple.

There are several apps that will automate certain things. Tasker is the one i use but it has a high learning curve. You can pretty much set your Xoom to run almost completely automatically.
