Anyone picking up a WiFi XOOM that has/had a 3G one?
I am reading a lot of people that are excited about getting their WiFi only XOOM...I'm glad that product finally made it's way to market.
I have a 3G XOOM that I bought at Costco on release day, and I have been considering taking it back and getting the WiFI only option. I disconnected my 3G service because I never used it. When I'm out and about, the WiFi hotspot on my Thunderbolt is wicked fast, and that $20 per month gets me 2GB that I can use with ANY device, as opposed to the $20 plan on the XOOM being 1GB, and obviously tied to the XOOM.
The reason I tell you all this, is because I am curious what the differences are beyond the 3G radio. If someone here has owned /owns both, I would love to hear any differences you've observed.
What are the thoughts on updates/support? I know that VZW is notorious for taking forever in QC with updates. Is the general concesus that one will get support better than the other, or will they be the same?
It isn't like I have a need for the $200 I'd get back from the exchange, but at the same time I want to make sure that when I move onto the next thing in god knows how many months, that I can get my highest percent of my investment back on the 2nd hand market. I just fee like the 3G won't command a $200 premium over the WiFi model in 6 months.
Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions. - 03-27-2011, 12:17 PM #2
I was thinking about turning mine in and getting a wifi only, I have a rooted Droid X ans a few times I connected to it using the hotspot and even tried blue tooth. The problem I forsee is being somewhere and need a connection and there's no open wifi. If you're on the phone transacting business or talking to someone I can't use my 3g. Right now I can't justify myself buying a 4G phone. As a matter of fact I'm thinking about downgrading my phone because I have a Xoom with 3G. I only wish that Moto upgraded everything to 4G. I hate the fact I have to shipped my goods out for a week that's just bad business thinking not to mention security risks for people using it for business. Upgrades need to be done buy a Verizon tech so you can get it back in the same day. What assurance I get from Moto they not looking or copying my info I stored

You need a data connection for Google Maps to download map data. Without it GPS on a WiFi only Xoom can only show you where you are with a WiFi connection and a thin roof for GPS penetration. You'll be able to navigate around a room just fine. Maps would only work with constant data tether.
