My one-month old Xoom has died
After all the nice things I’ve been saying about my Xoom, how much I’ve been talking it up to others for the past month that I’ve had it, mine up and died today.
I don’t know what has happened. When I last turned the screen off, it had plenty of battery, so, when it won’t come back on, I initially felt that the issue wasn’t that it had run out of power.
But, just to be sure, I hooked up the charger – nothing! The charging indicator light didn’t even light up. When I got home, I put in on the dock, and still nothing.
I took it to the Verizon store, where they confirmed that it wasn’t working, and not just a power issue.
Anyway, it turns out that the procedure for such issues is to send the unit back to Motorola for diagnosis/repair.
Verizon ordered a return box from Motorola for me to send it back in. But, I am pissed. No idea how long this is going to take (I have the uncomfortable feeling that this is going to take a long time). I was really getting used to using my Xoom primarily. It had been working out great for me, and seemed to be functioning perfectly well.
Anyway, just as I was a “Guinea pig” in getting one so early, it seems I’m also going to be a Guinea pig for the Motorola service/repair/replacement for them.
But, hopefully, I and my Xoom are not instead “canaries in the coal mine”. I had it just over a month, and while I did use mine extensively, a one-month lifespan is simply unacceptable. I certainly hope whatever has happened to mine is a “fluke” and not a result of some systemic flaw in the Xoom.
I don’t yet know if Motorola will disclose to me what has happened to my Xoom, but I hope they will.
In the meantime, I’m open to any (wild) speculation on what has happened.

Bought one at Costco for the wife, lasted exactly one week. She had turned it off for the night, and put it on the charger.
Next morning, nothing! Couldn't get it to turn on. Went back to Costco, and they confirmed it was out.
Got my money back.
Bought me the WIFI only Zoom.
Wife thinks she wants the Ipad...

Mine has appeared to be dead a few times - I lock the screen with plenty of battery, and when I go to unlock it nothing happens. Put it on the charger and still nothiing. I then press the up volume button and the power button at the same time for a few seconds, and then it boots up just fine. Apparently doing that forces a hard reset.
I was just getting ready to post a thread about my issue when I saw this thread.
Did you try holding volume up and power at the same time?
I have only had mine for 5 days so this is concerning me. It had happened both unrooted and rooted. I am wondering if it is an OS issue, a hard are issue, or a bad app.
It took three attempts, but it finally booted - though it seemed to lag on the logo screen for about 15-20 seconds.
I had heard from another source that the way to do this was to hold the "down" volume button and the power button together.
Now, I have to figure out what to do about the return box that Motorola is supposed to be sending me. I guess I'll call Verizon tomorrow and figure it out (or, rather, let them).
Which brings up the question...why didn't the woman who checked mine out know to try this?

Funny that you should mention the amazon mp3 app, it is one of the few apps I have installed since I rooted it. I have never even opened the app yet OSMonitor shows it running in the background. One to think of it I don't think I ever had the issue before installing the app. I am going to uninstall it now and see if the issue comes back.

That policy regarding the warranty is ridiculous if you ask me.
If you are having this problem it should be taken back and replaced right away if the water damage sticker doesn't indicate water damage.
I also can be sure of it not be a software issue, simple as that, you guys should return them because trust me if the Xoom had widespread problems like this, it would be porn for Apple fanboys to shrill about, but give it time and Engadget will have this thread up as a source for "widespread problems with the Xoom."

For those of you having the issue with it appearing to be dying, please list the apps you had downloaded and installed when the issue occurred. That way maybe we can figure out if it is a bad app or something. Here are the ones I have right now, with the issue still happening:

OK so looking at the permissions of the apps I have installed, I noticed Astro has "prevent tablet from sleeping." None of my other apps have that capability. I wonder if that could be the culprit? I already uninstalled OSMonitor, so I have to wait to see if that was the issue before trying another one.
