3.1 coming today!

Honeycomb 3.1 coming today for the VZW Xoom.

- Re sizable widegts!
- USB Host support ( game controllers, cameras, etc)
- This is the update that will let flash have hardware acceleration
- The Google Movies app is part of this update but will soon appear on the market for other devices

Movies from Google market coming with the 3.1 update, most likely this update will support hardware video playback along with HDCP for security reasons when using the HDMI output.

If you're rooted you can a) revert back to factory or b) wait for a custom software patch to be made to get the update.

Now we are talking. Hoping for sd support. USB host is seriously awesome news. Makes me love my Xoom even more (didn't know it was possible). I have a paper to write but I cannot get my eyes off the screen watching I/O..

2 questions:

1. wifi xooms, they will get the update?

2. rooted xooms? do we have to revert everything back to stock to get it?

This is first for VZW Xooms.

If you're rooted you'll have to go back to stock to get the OTA update to install successfully or wait for someone to apply an update patch for the a rooted system.

I never thought the phrase "resizable widgets" would make me so excited.

Using an xbox controller on a tablet sounds awesome as well, hopefully it's entirely wireless with no adapter or sensor needed.

so anyway, when exactly today is the update going to be available? It would be crazy to exclude the wifi version, no? I can't imagine why they would.

Yes!!!!! Looking forward to the update. Big fixes, new multitasking, resizable widgets, etc. Love it!

Most likely after the I/O. And if in fact Verizon Xoom owners are first to get the update ahead of Wi-Fi Xooms, that means Google is listening is giving some back to early adopters.

Wifi Xooms will get the 3.1 goodness soon enough. It's pretty typical for these updates to roll out in several stages across a platform.

So now with USB hosting, does that mean we can plug our Android device into the XOOM and have it charge?? Or read the device as memory?

according to the liveblog I read they're adding a scrollbar to the active apps window/pop up thing

Yes, I think we can see more apps when hitting the multitasking button.
Also, the OS will do a better job at suspending apps in the background, so we should be able to multitask better.

AFAIK, it means you should be able to plug in USB devices, like thumb drives, portable hard drives and cameras, and transfer data to and from the Xoom. So, even if the Xoom only has 32 gb of memory, you could take a 500 gb drive with you on a trip and transfer pictures taken from your camera, or movies to watch, to and from the drive. You need a special microUSB to USB adapter cable that supports the functionality.

(I don't know if it will support charging or not.)

I can't wait to get this! It sounds like since I have the wi-fi I may have to wait a bit longer than the 3G people though? And I am assuming we will need to go directly to Motorola to find this update, correct? I am on Tiamat 1.4.1, and not looking forward to having to return to stock. :/ Hopefully it won't be too bad.

After this update hits I'm sure BRD or someone, will have an update patch ready to go via recovery.
