Default [How-To] Root Google Nexus 10 & Install ClockworkMod Touch Recovery (Mac/PC)

    Attachment 47095

    Requirements

    • Nexus 10 with an unlocked bootloader.
    • ADB with fastboot installed on your system.
    • Android Debugging enabled in Settings > Developer Options.
    • (modded).
    • .

    Instructions

The guide will take you through flashing CWM Touch Recovery on the device, allowing you to flash the SuperSu binary package. Additionally, instructions to restoring to a pre-root condition will also follow.

    1) To begin, download the CWM Touch recovery and copy the file to the ‘platform-tools’ folder where fastboot.exe is. For your ease and convenience, rename CWM Touch recovery to "recovery".

    2) Download SuperSU binary package, and copy it to the root of the Nexus 10 storage.

3)Time to flash the recovery. Put your Nexus 10 into bootloader mode by holding the power button + both volume buttons at the same time and hold until the tablet starts up into the bootloader screen.

In Windows, open command prompt, switch to the path where ‘recovery.img’ is and enter the following command:
    Code:
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
For Mac, navigate to the file’s location in the terminal and enter the following command:
    Code:
    ./fastboot-mac flash recovery recovery.img

For Linux, navigate to the file’s location in the terminal and enter the following command:
    Code:
    ./fastboot-linux flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.6-manta-Wfix-by-damien667.img
    4) Go back to your Nexus 10's bootloader screen and once there, use the volume keys to navigate to ‘recovery’ and hit the power button to select it.

    5) If you booted into the recovery just fine, now would be a good time to make a Nandroid backup from ‘backup and restore’ so you have a safe point to return to.

    6) Navigate to ‘install zip from sdcard’ > ‘choose zip from sdcard’ and select the SuperSU zip file.

    7) Once the package has been installed, simply reboot the device.

Now, when the phone reboots, check your app drawer for SuperSU. If you find it, you’re device has been successfully rooted.

Restore To Pre-Root Condition From Backup

If you want to go back to how it was before you rooted the device, or are stuck in that infamous bootloop and are unable to boot into CWM Touch Recovery (like in Step 4 above), there’s no need to panic. You can still restore the backup you made in step 5 of the above method.

    1. Boot into fastboot mode.
    2. Boot into the CWM Touch recovery you copied to the platform-tools folder using the following terminal command:
      Code:
      fastboot boot recovery.img
    3. Navigate to ‘backup and restore’ and restore the backup you made earlier.

That is it.. once the backup is restored, simply reboot your device and cross you fingers. Things should go back to just the way they were.

I've gotten this all to work (unlocked bootloader, rooted, using modded 6.0.1.6 CWR touch), yet when I attempt to use clockwork touch to make a backup, it runs for about 10 seconds and then reboots... when I look in ES file explorer at the clockwork mod folder, there's no file/contents in there for the backup. Is this a known issue - is this CWR-touch mod not yet capable of making backups? As a funny side-note, when I tried flashing the latest 6.0.1.8 (non-touch) from within the android app... and when I get into recovery, I'm unable to use the power button to select anything (the cursor works, but the power button doesn't choose the selection) - I had to re-flash in the console the modded 6.0.1.8 to boot back in.

I literally just did this myself so this is still new to me as well... I don't have a CWM folder when viewing from a file manager but if I boot into recovery and try to restore a backup.. there is a clockworkmod folder but trying to restore one of my backups is giving me a mismatched MD5.

From what I understand this is still very beta.. it's just something for now so you can use root privileged apps until the devs get all the bugs worked out.. which shouldnt be long.

Just fyi - I downloaded the latest version of TWRP for the Nexus 10 which works beautifully. I highly suggest going this route for making backups. I already tested out a backup/restore and it worked without a hitch.

Dumb question: Will we eventually be able to root without unlocking the bootloader first?

All was well until i got to CWM recovery and tried to install the SuperSU zip. CWM reports that the sdcard can not be mounted. Could not mount the sdcard using "mount /sdcard" from the CWM menu either. Now just loops at the boot screen ... any suggestions?

TWRP ??? whats that stand for? on google play as a key key it brought up titanium backup. is that what was referred to?
I have TB on my smartphone, was wondering if it works for N10, or if there is something equivalent.

    TWRP = TeamWin Recovery Project:
    An alternative to CWM.
It is not the same as Titanium Backup (yes, Titanium Backup is available on the N10).

    a) Unlock the boot loader
    b) root the device.

I have an android smartphone (Droid Bionic). I've rooted it, though still using stock VzW ROM. So I understand rooting, since the OS doesnt
allow by default users to do anything/everything. For me the point was to have Titanium Backup Pro to backup everything.

I have a nexus 10, I've not turned it on yet,but I'm about to. Why does the N10 need to be "unlocked" in order to be rooted. What is the bootloader
and what really does locked/unlocked mean.

How does a locked/unlock vs rooted/non-rooted factor into future JB updates for the N10. Will I still get all the updated no matter what?

    noob questions.

I'm also confused by the differently options for "touch recovery" like most N10 rooting talk about ClockWorkMod. This thread mentioned TWRP. I dont understand the purpose of these "recovery" projects/programs.

At the end of the day, I really want the ability to 1) continue to receive OS updates, and 2) to be able to make full backups (I sorta like TBpro and I think the pro license works across devices so I'm possible good on that).

    Thanks for the advice.

I tried this and it bricked my Nexus 10.

After I unlocked the bootloader I flashed CWM. And in CWM it couldn't mount anything.

Then after trying to restart it would get stuck on the X screen.

If you run into this problem.
Hold down power button till the X goes away.
Hold power, up, down to boot into bootloader
    Connect usb
In CMD window type "Fastboot -w" This will wipe everything

That worked for me and got me unbricked and back to stock.

I will trying rooting it again, maybe with a different recovery, not sure if CWM is broken still for the Nexus 10. But I thought they fixed it. I just finished rooting 2 other devices and flashing CWM (N4,N7) with problems, so I don't know what could be wrong. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention. Anyways. I hope this helps someone else who gets stuck in my situation.
