I want to make a change to the file /system/etc/media_profiles.xml and I have the SDK installed on my computer. I'd like to make the change without rooting my phone, is that possible?

Not as easily, it would be much simpler to root and unroot afterwards if need be, assuming you've unlocked the bootloader already.
