You need a USB OTG cable like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0087...U3491003#ref=mp_s_a_1_2&qid=1393766769&sr=8-2

Sent from my AT&T One X running CodefireX ROM Android Version 4.4.

That is an OTG cable, but it will not supply necessary voltage to the USB port. It needs to look something like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CX...droidcentral00-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU3491003

It will have a micro male end for your phone. Micro female end to plug your power adapter into and a standard female end to plug in something like your flash drive.

Your kernel will also have to support external storage.

If it is just a thumb drive or USB stick, it should work fine provided you have the right kernel.

No it won't, the USB stick will not have any power whatsoever without external source. There simply isn't any power output from the Nexus 4 port.
