Towel root is perfectly safe. I've used it on multiple devices and had 0 issues

The site only mentions "at&t and verizon s5"

I'm using a nexus5 on t-mobile. Nervous about this but kind of hamstrung by the fact that every attempt to root on my ubuntu system has failed.

It's only risky if you start changing things that shouldn't be, but it's really no more risky than having admin access on a pc. With root access you can install adblock and other helpful things, and have more customization of the device. But I still haven't done it yet! :)

There is a lot of good information related to root here: Rooting your Android | Android Central

If anyone plans on rooting their device(s) I'd highly suggest reading up and understanding root. Also, be sure to understand the process for rooting the Nexus 5 before attempting, and know your plan B if something goes wrong (i.e. process to flash the factory image to restore). If there are any questions let us know.
