Why can't I install any ROMs successfully?

I have a Nexus 5x with TWRP installed and would like to add a custom ROM to my phone. Every time I go to install a ROM other than my stock android ROM my phone however just constantly bootloops. This has happened for CM13 as well as Resurrection Reloaded. Before I install every rom I go into TWRP and wipe my dalvik, system, data, and cache. Any suggestions on how to fix this and successfully install a rom?

I was on android 7.1.1. Currently I don´t have an OS installed because I wiped everything except internal storage to install a ROM...

7.0+ requires a custom boot image. That is probably why you are having a bootloop.

Is the boot image within a zip folder that I downloaded for the ROM or is it a separate download? and do I have to manually mount the image?

I think it's a separate thing to install. I'm not entirely sure though.

You are welcome. I think root needs the same thing. That might get you more results.
